North Haven Beach 11 x 14 oil on linen by Casey Chalem Anderson

Do you ever find yourself weary of the Hamptons’ lush beauty? Even when the congested roads test your patience, a glance at the sky can reveal cloud formations and colors that ignite your imagination. Take a moment to appreciate the green fields around you. I focus on the constant changes in Nature—pausing to breathe in the sight of a massive cloud formation thickening across the sky. It’s a performance.

For over a century, artists have been drawn to the East End of Long Island, captivated by its natural beauty. The area’s appeal to creative minds began in the late 19th century, with picturesque landscapes, serene beaches, and a unique quality of light attracting painters. I have no doubt that some of these artists’ works inspired others to visit and see the land with their own eyes. Today, we all play the role of occasional photographer, quickly pulling out our iPhones to capture the moment. I’m constantly snapping photos and I use them as references in my paintings.

But here’s the key difference between capturing a beautiful scene in a photo and rendering it in oil paint: it’s the element of time. People often ask how long it takes to complete a painting. My answer is never precise—I’m not counting. Yet, the time invested is crucial to the painting’s resonance. Each stroke, each layer, builds up the surface until it captures the essence of the place. The time I commit to the process is reflected in the finished work, translating what I see into a lasting image.

When you view a painting that reveals the artist’s hand, you see Nature through their unique language. You might even begin to recognize the clouds or the water as seen through the painter’s eyes, noticing the subtle changes along the way.

Enjoy,

Casey
