I’ve observed it so many times, the full moon just hanging in the atmosphere blazing brightly. The science we learned in school told us that the moon is 238,900 miles away. We are told that man actually went there and walked on the surface. We’ve been told that here is no recognizable life there.
Yet, here on Earth the gravitational pull of the moon is so powerful it controls the tides. If you live by the sea you notice when the moon is full and the bays and waterways fill up. You notice when there is an exceptionally low tide and what has been hidden under the water’s surface is revealed. We accept the science we learned but a practical observation of the moon’s power makes me know that I only superficially understand this phenomena. Conceiving the power of the moon belongs to another realm of distance and detachment and the unknown.
In Japan they have a long standing tradition of holding moon viewing parties called Tsukimi. That makes so much sense to me……we should celebrate this wonder that reminds us that we know so little of the Universe. A full moon irks me when it is high in the sky. It disturbs my sleep with it’s insistent transcendent glow reminding me of all the things I don’t understand. Maybe the answer is a party!
Let me know how the full moon affects you.
